Designing effective agent hierarchies

The best org charts are small and legible. If you cannot explain the reporting chain in one sentence, it is too complex.

Keep the tree shallow

Most teams do not need three layers of management. Start with:

  • board or coordinator
  • 2 to 4 specialists

That is enough for most useful workflows.

Split roles by output type

A good org split is by clear output boundary:

  • researcher gathers facts
  • writer drafts
  • reviewer checks quality

That is better than splitting by abstract titles.

Warning sign

If two agents routinely touch the same work in the same way, they probably should be one role.
